Angela Marie Cairo
Angela Marie Cairo,
92, loving mother of Marie Regina Idler and her husband John of Fort
Washington and Frank John Cairo and his wife Mary Jo of Ambler,
doting grandmother of six, and cherished great grandmother of
eleven, died March 21 at The Artman Lutheran Home in Ambler. Angela
was the beloved wife of John for sixty years, until his passing in
1993. Mrs. Cairo is survived also by her dear sister and brother,
Matilda Izzillo of Flourtown and Frank Sforza of Hatfield, and
many nieces and nephews.
Angela was a kind,
sweet, spiritual woman who carried herself with dignity and grace,
and was loved by all who met her. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting,
ceramics and knitting.
Formerly of Fort
Washington, Mrs. Cairo was born in New York City in 1914. After
graduating from The Saint Angela Merici School, Angela studied at
the Mitchell Designing School in Manhattan. She designed and made
many wedding gowns and formal dresses for family, friends and
herself.
She met John in New
York, and they married in February, 1933. They came to Philadelphia
in 1941 after purchasing a business. In 1948, Angela and John moved
to Fort Washington and built the Pike Restaurant in Spring House.
Later, Mrs. Cairo and her husband owned and operated the Fort
Washington Swim Club for fourteen years. They retired in 1976 and
became very active in local senior citizens’ groups. They took
several trips to Europe during their later years that included
visits to John’s homeland in Italy. They moved to the Meadowood
Retirement Community in 1993.
A founding member of
Saint Alphonsus Parish, Mrs. Cairo later joined Corpus Christi
Church and acted as liaison between Meadowood’s Catholic residents
and the parish. Also at Meadowood, she was an integral part of the
Kit Abbott Craft Room.
Relatives & Friends
are invited to call after 10:00 AM Saturday March 25, 2006 at St.
Alphonsus Church Conwell Drive Maple Glen with a Funeral Mass at
11:00 AM with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas Owens, Pastor as celebrant.
Internment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham.
