Angela Marie Cairo

Angela Marie Cairo, 92, loving mother of Marie Regina Idler and her husband John of Fort Washington and Frank John Cairo and his wife Mary Jo of Ambler, doting grandmother of six, and cherished great grandmother of eleven, died March 21 at The Artman Lutheran Home in Ambler.  Angela was the beloved wife of John for sixty years, until his passing in 1993.  Mrs. Cairo is survived also by her dear sister and brother, Matilda Izzillo of  Flourtown  and Frank Sforza of Hatfield, and many nieces and nephews.

Angela was a kind, sweet, spiritual woman who carried herself with dignity and grace, and was loved by all who met her.  She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, ceramics and knitting.

Formerly of Fort Washington, Mrs. Cairo was born in New York City in 1914.  After graduating from The Saint Angela Merici School, Angela studied at the Mitchell Designing School in Manhattan.  She designed and made many wedding gowns and formal dresses for family, friends and herself.

She met John in New York, and they married in February, 1933.  They came to Philadelphia in 1941 after purchasing a business. In 1948, Angela and John moved to Fort Washington and built the Pike Restaurant in Spring House. Later, Mrs. Cairo and her husband owned and operated the Fort Washington Swim Club for fourteen years.  They retired in 1976 and became very active in local senior citizens’ groups.  They took several trips to Europe during their later years that included visits to John’s homeland in Italy. They moved to the Meadowood Retirement Community in 1993.

A founding member of Saint Alphonsus Parish, Mrs. Cairo later joined Corpus Christi  Church and acted as liaison between Meadowood’s Catholic residents and the parish.  Also at Meadowood, she was an integral part of the Kit Abbott Craft Room.

Relatives & Friends are invited to call after 10:00 AM Saturday March 25, 2006 at St. Alphonsus Church Conwell Drive Maple Glen with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas Owens, Pastor as celebrant.  Internment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham.

Remembrances may be sent to the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal, 475 East Chelten Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa.  19144-5785.
