John S. “Jack”  Friel

John S. “Jack”  Friel, 73 of  Horsham PA., died suddenly Friday in the Abington Memorial Hospital Abington, PA. 

Born in Philadelphia, PA., he was the son of the late John and the late Marie (nee Heinze) Friel, Sr.

Jack was a graduate of St. Joseph's Prep and St. Joseph's University in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1957 He was hired by North East Catholic High School as a Latin teacher and remained for 17 years and held the positions of disciplinarian, Vice Principal and Basketball Coach and was the first Inductee into the North East Catholic Basketball Hall of Fame. In 1975 Jack went to work for the Blue Bell Inn in Blue Bell, Pa. and was the General Manager at the time of his death.  

Mr. Friel was a member of  St. Catherine of Siena Church in Horsham, Pa. and an active participant of St. Alphonsus Church in Maple Glen, Pa.

He is survived by his wife Helen F. (nee Smith) Friel of Horsham, PA; two sons, John S. (Kate) Friel III and Andrew C. (Lori) Friel both of Devon, PA; a daughter Kristin  Friel of New York, NY and four grandchildren.

Relatives and Friends may call Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Anton B. Urban Funeral Home 1111 S. Bethlehem Pike, Ambler, and Friday 10:00 to 10:45 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church 321 Witmer Rd. Horsham, Pa. with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM.  Interment will be private.
