Frank R. Romano
age 94, son of Dominic and Maria (Stendardo) Romano died May
18, 2007.
He is survived
by his wife Jeanne, sons Thomas, Richard, and his wife
Maxine, of Ambler, stepchildren and spouses Nancy Jeanne
Rosenberg, Alexandria, Va., Mary Ellen and Joseph Frompovich,
Maple Glen, Charles C. and Joanne Hanes, Finksburg, Md. and
Brian A. and Michele Hanes, Chalfont, nine grandchildren and
two great grandchildren, his brothers John of Ambler and
Joseph Romano of Penllyn and sister Mary Roberto of Ambler.
He received his
B.S. and M. S. Degrees from Penn State in 1937 and 1940 in
Environmental Biochemistry, making Phi Lambda Epsilon
national chemistry honorary fraternity.
From 1941 to
1947 he was an Naval chemist during which time he published
papers on the biological breakdown of organic military
materials in the South Pacific, receiving letters of
commendation from the Commandant of the 4 th
Naval District.
In 1947 he
founded and directed Ambler Laboratories until 1990 during
which time he was involved with discussions on analysis of
herbicides and Pesticides for UNICEF in Geneva, Switzerland,
and was consultant for "Health Waters of the World",
representing them in Switzerland, Italy and France for these
countries water companies. He pioneered the formulation of
testing parameters using the Evening Bulletin plane in 1952.
He was a
political activist marching with Dr. Martin Luther King in
1967 and ran for U.S. Congress in opposition to the Vietnam
War and the Nuclear reactor being built at Limerick. His 3
decades of political activism inevitably let him to the
bi-monthly Montgomery County Commissioner's meetings where
he became a regularly recognized expert on many
environmental issues.
Elected
Chairman of the Philadelphia Section of the American
Institute of Chemists for the years 1974 and 1975 he is also
a member of the American Chemical Society. Chairman of the
Montgomery County Air and Water Pollution Patrol and of the
Senor Doctor of Chemistry Appellation Committee (SDC).
His hobbies
were horse back riding - including riding with the Gwynedd
Valley Hunt, flying his own airplane based at Wings Field,
and the study of languages. He has a copyright on the
re-arrangement of letters in the Russian alphabet to make it
easier for American travelers to understand and was writing
a book called "Short-Cut Russian".
Relatives and
friends are invited to call on Monday, May 21st, 2007 after
9:30 AM at St. Joseph’s Church Main & Poplar Sts. Ambler and
to his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private.

Hospital Hospice, 2510 Maryland Rd., Suite 250, Willow
Grove, PA 19090-0520 would be appreciated.
